A few programme notes on this concert:
Saint-Saëns was an advocate of contemporary French music, as a counterweight to the many well-known and widely performed German composers of his time. He wrote music that he wanted to sound beautiful and moving, without ever being complicated or intellectualist. Although his work can be defined as highly virtuosic, it can be understood by every listener. Saint-Saëns has also been referred to the ‘French melody maker’.
