A few programme notes on this concert:
Saint-Saëns was one of the most celebrated pianists of his era. As he was aware of his status in this respect, we cannot deny him a certain exhibitionism. He enjoyed taking the stage together with other pianists, preferably each performing on his own piano. High time to become acquainted – or reacquainted – with his piano music! The common thread running through the festival is a selection of violin sonatas by Belgian violinist and composer Eugène Ysaÿe, for whom Saint-Saëns wrote his first string quartet. Ysaÿe’s sonatas have a romantic flavour and require a fair amount of virtuosity. In this, he is not inferior to Saint-Saëns: this is music that requires a high degree of musicianship from its performers. Spectacular musical fireworks guaranteed!
