De Emory Chamber Music Society of Atlanta presents: 'From Atlanta with Beethoven'

On 16 November 2018 the Concertgebouw will be receiving some very special guests: the Vega Quartet and the William Ramson Piano Trio will be performing in the Recital Hall (Kleine Zaal). Both ensembles come from Atlanta, Georgia: the Vega Quartet is Quartet in Residence at Atlanta’s Emory University, where Ransom is head of the piano faculty. He is also the founder and artistic director of the Emory Chamber Music Society in the same city.

The programme features two of Beethoven’s greatest masterpieces: the Archduke Trio, Op. 97 in B-flat and the String Quartet, Op. 130 in the same key. The première performance of the Archduke Trio was also the last time that Beethoven appeared in public as a pianist – a concert that also featured his String Quartet Op. 130, with the Great Fugue as the finale. This work was later given an opus number of its own: Op. 133. The audience, musicians and publisher, however, found this piece to be rather long and asked for a lighter, more easily digestible finale that was better suited to the other movements. This is the version that will be played on 16 November.
